This £800,000 project, delivered over a 20-week programme, involves the removal of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) and the installation of a new roofing system, along with associated remedial works. Taking place within a live hospital setting, the scheme has required detailed planning and coordination to ensure minimal disruption to patients, staff, and ongoing clinical services.

We’re proud to be working collaboratively with the following project partners:

  • DAY Architecture

  • MDA Engineering Services

  • Walker Sime

Project Considerations and Challenges

The live nature of the site, combined with structural complexities, has presented a number of logistical challenges:

  • The RAAC removal process has demanded a carefully sequenced approach, supported by the installation of temporary roof coverings to provide weather protection during each phase of work.

  • Due to restricted access across the hospital estate, all materials are being handled and positioned using cranage, ensuring safe and efficient delivery to the work zones.

  • At the request of the client, full protection of the existing Fire Fighting Systems (FFS) has been maintained throughout, with extra precautions in place to avoid disruption to the hospital’s safety infrastructure.

Apprenticeship Involvement

As part of our ongoing commitment to skills development, KC apprentice Izak Serrano has been contributing to the delivery of this scheme.

Working closely with the site team, Izak has been gaining hands-on experience in restricted access management, material logistics, and the challenges of operating in a live healthcare environment.
