Krol Corlett completed the new multi-million build extension at Bolton College to enhance the engineering and computing departments of the further education institution.
The innovative three-storey teaching facility included ultra-modern IT suites, multi-function classrooms and workshop spaces. It will provide a more sustainable, energy-efficient resilient future. This is constructed using steel structural framing, concrete roof structure, flat roof coverings, brick and glazed facades.
It also uses advanced technologies like solar energy utilisation, triple-glazed windows, and Wraptight wall construction, with insulated up to 250mm of extra material all enhancing energy efficiency.
The stunning extension featured a net-zero design, meaning the building produces as much energy as it uses, reducing its carbon footprint completely.

Challenges of this Live Site
There were logistical challenges to navigate during this 12-month project, with 2,000 students present at a live site, as well as public car parks and one-way systems.
As part of the construction phase, Krol Corlett carefully dismantled the cladding of an adjacent gable elevation. It was essential that the works were completed in a manner which ensured that the adjacent building remained watertight throughout the duration of these specialist works to allow the facilities to remain accessible to students at all times.
Krol Corlett successfully managed multiple road closures during the works, coordinating closely with local authorities to accommodate a 100-tonne crane for the installation of pre-cast concrete flooring and 51 No. 400mm CFA piles.
All works were carried out in close proximity to adjacent college buildings, with careful planning to minimise disruption to students, the public, and the wider community.

Social Value
Krol Corlett is proud to have installed a world-class facility at Bolton College to develop the next generation.
During the project, we invited young learners on-site to learn more about the net zero design process and strengthen our commitment to the future of North West construction.
Throughout the build, we engaged with Bolton College and other educational institutions to ensure student timetables continued uninterrupted.
The project also continued our commitment to working with Higher and Further Education facilities after other highly successful developments at University of Liverpool, University of Salford, University of Manchester and City of Liverpool College.
Apprenticeships:
Sam Holbrook, Apprentice Quantity Surveyor at Krol Corlett, played a key role in the Bolton College project, gaining hands-on experience as part of the senior commercial team. This involvement significantly contributed to his personal development within his role, enhancing his understanding of project management and commercial processes.
