Krol Corlett successfully delivered the £4.2m, 52-week refurbishment of the historic Grade II* listed Walker Art Gallery and Midland Railway Building, with works focused on meticulous restoration and 650m² of roof renewal. Commissioned by the Board of Trustees of National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside, the project built on our previous collaboration at the Liverpool World Museum’s Egyptian Gallery, ensuring a strong and efficient partnership.

Through close coordination with the client, design team, and community, and by maintaining clear communication throughout, we minimised disruption and maximised project value. The result stands as a testament to the team’s dedication, collaboration, and expertise in delivering complex heritage restorations.

Challenges

KROL C~4

The restoration of these historic buildings brought significant challenges, from working in live public spaces and a busy city centre with limited access, to navigating stringent planning controls and weather-dependent roof works. Starting in March, roof renewal was particularly difficult, requiring constant programme reviews and specialist skills to meet Grade II listed requirements.

Despite these obstacles—including pandemic-related disruptions—Krol Corlett ensured health and safety remained paramount, maintained rigorous quality control, and adapted swiftly to changing conditions. Through meticulous planning and collaboration, the project was completed ahead of schedule while preserving authenticity and minimising disruption.

Environmental Stewardship

WALKER~4

Our commitment to minimising our environmental footprint was exemplified through the establishment of a comprehensive Environmental Management Plan. We embraced the ethos of sustainability by engaging local labour, suppliers, and subcontractors, thereby reducing our carbon footprint.

Our dedication to eco-friendly practices was evident through initiatives such as recycling, harnessing solar power, and utilising green materials.

Furthermore, this project not only celebrated the cultural heritage of the region but also served as a beacon for sustainable construction practices.

The restoration of the Walker Art Gallery & Midland Railway Building stands as a shining testament to our innovative spirit, collaborative efforts, and unwavering commitment to preserving and revitalising history.
