Krol Corlett Construction is delivering the refurbishment of the Ground Floor chemotherapy treatment centre at Halton Hospital in Runcorn (currently known as CANtreat), on behalf of Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust.

The project involves the partial internal demolition and removal of the existing ward area to make way for new construction works, creating additional open bay chairs and treatment rooms, a new reception and waiting area, and new clean and dirty utility facilities, all in line with the design team’s drawings and specifications.

“We all have people close to us that have undergone cancer treatment so we’re very mindful of the importance of this job to patients.

As with the many other jobs we undertake for the NHS, this is a live clinical environment with lots of moving parts and hygiene factors that need very careful management. Our team on site has years of experience delivering similar projects and our working protocols extend to our supply chain.

It’s a job we’re proud to have won and it’s one we’re very much looking forward to delivering to the highest possible standard.”

Benefits for Patients

Once complete, the refurbished unit will give patients a calmer, more comfortable environment in which to receive treatment, an important factor given that many chemotherapy sessions last several hours. The remodelled space has been designed with the patient experience in mind, offering a more peaceful setting for what can be a long and difficult day.

The additional open bay chairs and treatment rooms will mean more patients can be treated at Halton, reducing the need for some patients to travel further afield for care.

Our Halton treatment unit is a very special place and an important part of our network of Clatterbridge centres across the region, providing specialist cancer care to people close to home wherever possible.

We care about every aspect of the treatment experience. Many cancer treatments take several hours so it is important that patients can enjoy a peaceful environment and comfortable facilities while they are here. This investment in upgrading our Halton unit will benefit thousands of patients, remodel the space to create additional treatment capacity and enable us to offer clinical trials in Halton in the future.

I also want to thank our colleagues in North Cheshire and Mersey NHS Foundation Trust, who have been so supportive in accommodating this fantastic service and allowing us to relocate our service to Ward B3 while the refurbishment takes place.”
