Live Works
Improvements to platform 4 will provide a bright and modern public house, with the emphasis on restoring the building’s historic features such as fireplaces, windows and timber roof trusses.
The refurbishment and fit-out programme for station owner Network Rail will see the addition of a new mezzanine floor, complemented by modern heating systems to improve energy efficiency.
Public access will be improved by allowing direct ingress from the station car park, with outdoor seating increasing the space’s usability and appeal.
“It’s one of those jobs that we can’t wait to finish as it’s tailor-made for us to toast the team’s work.
The development makes good use of our skills in preserving heritage buildings as well as our organisational experience in working on ‘live’ sites, such as hospitals, schools and transport hubs. They always pose some challenges, but we take them in our stride.”
Social Value
Krol Corlett has utilised its network to ensure as many local workers and suppliers as possible have been used for the pub’s fit-out.
This is Carlisle’s station and by using the city’s resources in this way we enhance local people’s sense of ownership of the final job.
Social value is set at the forefront of every project at Krol Corlett, to ensure we serve the community, making a difference and giving-back to the area of the project.
We are so excited to see the final result!
“Carlisle Citadel Station earned its listing for a very good reason.
“It is an outstanding piece of civic architecture and a fitting gateway to Carlisle city centre. Our designs will enhance the station’s appeal and usability, whilst providing animation at street level.
“We’ve found a perfect balance between heritage conservation and a modern use, contributing to the station’s evolution as a key economic and cultural hub for the city,”
